On Thursday, May 25th, we will have an end of semester language assessment. It will cover most everything we have learned this school year including: Greek/Latin roots and their meanings, parts of speech, basic grammar, punctuation, quotation marks, commas, and editing mistakes in writing,

Hoot Vocabulary/Spelling Words- Chapters 9 and 10:
alternative- (noun) an alternative is another option, choice, or way to achieve something. An alternative plan is one that you can use if you do not want to use the first one. An alternative to eating broccoli might be eating spinach. When you are given an alternative it means that you have another option or way to do something.
appealing- (adjective) describes something that others want to have. For example, a birthday cake might be appealing because it is covered in delicious icing and chocolate chips.
cautiously- (adverb) When you are doing something cautiously, you are being very careful and trying to avoid any accidents.
impatient- (adjective) If you are impatient then you don’t like to wait.
positive- (adjective) means good and the opposite of positive is negative. If you have a positive attitude about homework, for example, you're more likely to get positive comments on your report card. Positive also means sure. If you are positive that you got the correct answer, it means you are sure.
receiving- (verb) means to get something. On your birthday you might receive many presents from your friends.

Hoot Vocabulary Words- Chapters 7 and 8:
against - (preposition) on the opposite (or opposing) side, or to be pressed close to something.
"My team played soccer against Kent's team." or "My face was pressed against the car window."
amiably- (adverb) describes something you do in a friendly way, like when you chat amiably with your neighbor when you're both out walking your dogs.
depend - (verb) to depend on someone means to rely on someone to be there for you. You rely on your parents to give you clothes, food, and a home, and you can't survive without depending on them.
familiar- (noun) When something is so common and you know it very well, it is familiar. A familiar song might be one that you hum along to without even thinking about it. A familiar face would be the face of your parent or sibling.
hasty - (adjective) acting with great speed or in a hurried manner, sometimes without thinking clearly. "She had to go to the bathroom badly, so she made a hasty exit out of the classroom."
incentive - (noun) an incentive is something that makes you want to work harder. If your mom wants you to mow the lawn but you don't feel like it, she might offer to treat you to ice cream after as an incentive.
retrieve - (verb) to go somewhere and get something. If you are playing baseball in your backyard and the ball went over the fence, you would need to go to your neighbor's house to retrieve the ball.
routine - (noun) a routine is something that is the same every time you do it. You might have an after school routine of eating a snack, doing homework, having screen time, having dinner, brushing teeth, and going to bed.
unfortunately - (adverb) we use the word unfortunately to describe an event that is unlucky or bad in some way. If you got a bad grade on a test, you might say, "Unfortunately, I did not do so well on my test this week."
vicinity - (noun) if something is in your vicinity, it's in the surrounding area or nearby. If there's a garbage dump in your vicinity, you'll certainly smell it.

assertive - (adjective) to be overly aggressive or confident
conceal - (verb/adjective) to hide or keep something hidden from sight
emerge - (verb) to appear or to come out of hiding
encounter - (verb) to come in contact with a person or thing, usually unexpectedly
hassle - (verb) to bother or annoy someone
inevitable - (noun) something that is certain to happen or unavoidable.

sluggish - (adjective) feeling lazy, tired, slow, exhausted, or without energy
